Data protection solutions specialist Acronis launched an update to its mobile file management (MFM) solution mobileEcho, adding in-app editing tools for Microsoft (MSFT) Office documents and military-grade encryption. The goal with version 4.5 is to complement basic file access in mobile device management solutions (MDM).

Acronis said mobilEcho 4.5's in-app editing keeps users away from unapproved ways of accessing files, removing the need for employees to purchase insecure apps that could compromise the integrity of sensitive data.

Acronis Product Management Vice President Anders Lofgren said in a prepared statement that Acronis wants to take the rules of handling secure data and rewrite them.

"By turning mobile devices into true business platforms, we can let users seamlessly access and edit documents, while maintaining a high level of security," he said. "That way, enterprise employees can continue to work efficiently using mobilEcho, while the corporation’s critical data assets remain completely protected."

The new version also includes a FIPS 140-2 certified encryption module, required by many highly-regulated industries. Other new features offer support for SharePoint 365, allowing organizations to grant secure access to all SharePoint content; document thumbnail preview, enabling users to easily select the right files when browsing; and support for client certificate authentication.
