The new breed of mobility represented by devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Apple iPhone also presents IT staff with a slew of potential headaches, as employees increasingly want to use their own tablets, smartphones and, yes, home computers in the workplace. To help MSPs and cloud service providers meet the challenge of that IT consumerization, Trend Micro has updated its Mobile Security offering to version 7.

Trend Micro recently surveyed "enterprise IT decision-makers" and found that 74 percent of organizations already allowed employees to use their own devices. Moreover, 80 percent of respondents said putting critical data on a mobile device makes it far more susceptible to attack and breach.

To address those concerns, Trend Micro Mobile Security 7 is offering the following features, according to the press release:
  • Centralized, single console device management, which includes individual device provisioning/de-provisioning for network and application access, as well as visibility into device status.
  • Data protection, which ranges from remote lock and wipe in the event of theft to locking down Bluetooth access, card readers and even cameras to meet regulatory compliance needs.
  • Malware protection powered by Trend Micro cloud intelligence.
  • Support for most major smartphone platforms, including Apple iOS, Google Android, Symbian and Microsoft Windows Phone 7.
The new security offering is available now, either standalone or as part of the larger Trend Micro OfficeScan physical and virtual security infrastructure, both at $23.70 per user for enterprises with 251 or more seats.

The company is also offering Trend Micro Mobile Security 7 as part of its various Enterprise Security Suite offerings for between $39 and $70 per user depending on the edition chosen, with discounts given for adding it to an existing deployment. It's also a free upgrade for Mobile Security 5.5 users with current maintenance.

No doubt, the Apple iPad and devices like it are only getting more popular. We'll be keeping an eye on how the channel deals with the rising trend, so keep watching.
