Data backup solutions provider STORServer has released a Virtual Appliance solution, a downloadable virtual machine designed to use VMware Consolidated Backup. The company developed this solution to provide customers with the ability to use their existing hardware with STORServer’s software and solutions. Here are the details.

Traditional STORServer backup appliances required the use of STORServer hardware. The new Virtual Appliance is available as a downloadable VMDK file to provide the same fully integrated solution but loaded on their own hardware, according to the company. In a statement, the company said that its Virtual Appliance can compete "against any similar sized backup solution, providing resellers and end users an alternative to the traditional appliance model." Virtual Appliance additionally allows the backup of operating systems and email applications.

Users have the ability to back up and restore across all network connections (NAS, SAN, LAN and WAN) and from hundreds of storage devices. STORServer’s support offers a single point of contact for warranty and support of all non-hardware related events. Building upon IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, a data protection technology, STORServer offers enterprise backup appliances, software and services, and archive and disaster recovery challenges.

To purchase the new solution, customers can contact a certified STORServer reseller or  visit the company's homepage to quote their own STORServer Backup Appliance. STORServer sells exclusively through a nationwide network of backup partners.
